A Little Thought: Thank You Texas

My family and I are moving from Texas to Ohio this week. It is a happy move for a better job, and we'll be living in the country--something we've always dreamed of. Yet even though our family has only lived in Texas for a year, I find myself sad to leave.

Now I'm a Yankee, born and raised in the northern part of the 13 colonies. The last place that I ever thought I would find myself loving is Texas. But fellow Yankees be warned! Texas grows on you.

I am particularly struck by the dynamism of the Texas sky. There's a lot of power in that sky. When we first got here and drove up onto one of the elevated highways, it looked as if the sky could swallow me. Never had I seen that particular kind of beauty.

With such a large canvas, the weather here is dramatic. Never had I experienced a thunder storm that literally rolled, or seen a sun shower, or beheld such an expansive sunset. Never had I felt so much sun on a cold winter day, watched hot autumn winds sweep everything away with them, or breathed the quick, fresh air of a storm rushing unencumbered from flat land.

Thank you, Texas. Thank you for teaching me about a beauty that I was not accustomed to, and for showing me that God's beauty cannot be tethered. Even though we live in a suburb, nature here is wild and free, unrestricted by the little people and little houses that reside under your cavernous sky. I know that I am only just acquainted with it, but I'm grateful to have at least caught a glimpse.

I will miss you, Texas. And even though I am a Yankee who lived here but a year, I will always love you.

"Sun and moon, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Stars of heaven, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Every shower and dew, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

All you winds, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Fire and heat, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Cold and chill, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Dew and rain, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Frost and chill, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Hoarfrost and snow, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Nights and days, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Light and darkness, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Lightnings and clouds, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

Let the earth bless the Lord,
praise and exalt him above all forever."

Daniel 3: 62-74, NABRE

  2. A good friend of mine also fell in love with Texas! Makes me hope (in some ways) that we get stationed there sometime. Not likely, though. I hope you have a good move!
